About
A good dog for your files.
Free for Mac and Windows.
Most of us have thousands of files and remember almost none of their names. We remember what they were: the permission slip for the school trip, the logo with the blue swirl, the bit of code that signs people in. Lookhound lets you search the way you remember.
Type a description in your own words, or drop in a picture, and Lookhound brings back the files that match what you meant, even when the file name has nothing to do with what you typed. Click a result and it opens in Finder or File Explorer, already selected.
How it understands your files
Lookhound runs three small AI models on your own computer. Each one reads a different kind of file and turns it into a kind of fingerprint of its meaning:
- CLIP looks at your pictures and app icons, so you can describe an image or search with one.
- MiniLM reads your documents: PDFs, Word files, notes and plain text.
- Jina Code reads source code, so you can describe what a piece of code does.
When you search, your words get the same treatment, and Lookhound shows you the files whose meaning sits closest to yours. All of this happens on your machine. Nothing is uploaded.
Looking after you
Lookhound is meant to feel calm and kind. It greets you by name, keeps your recent searches a tap away, shows what's new on your computer, and quietly watches your folders so a file you saved a moment ago is already searchable. It never nags, never upsells, and never asks you to make an account.
Free, and staying that way
Lookhound is free and open source under the MIT licence. There's no subscription and no premium tier. It updates itself when a new version is out, so you don't have to think about it.
